ARTIFICIAL INCUBATION REGULATION OF TEMPERATURE—II. The most important item in the construction ofincubators is the maintenance of an even tem-perature throughout the twenty-one days of theincubation period. Not only is an even tempera-ture required in one part of the machine, but inall parts of tin egg chamber. CAPSULE REGULATING MECHANISM The most generally used form of temperatureregulator is tiie capsule or liquid regtilator. Thisconsists of two round or square corrugatedpieces of copper about two inches in diameter, between which is sealed up a small quantity of anixture of alcohol and ether, which vaporises Diagr A. and consequently expands at a low expansion of the liquid forces the two piecesof metal apart since it cannot escape, and causesthe capsule to bulge. The capsule rests on a firmbase, and in a small cup-shaped depression on itsupper side rests the regulating rod. By means ofthis bulging of the capsule the damper over thelamp flue is made to lift through the medium ofthe regulating rod and the regulating arm, andso controls the amount of heat allowed to passinto the flue of the water tank or the egg chamberaccording to the type of machine. Diagram A shows the position of the damper (3)before the expansion of the capsule (5). Diagram B shows the position of the damperafter the capsule has been made to expand by theheat of the egg chamber in the upper portion ofwhich it is fixed.
