Polish artist Wojciech Chmielduring archaeological works and experiments in Banganarti, Sudan

We don’t know who painted the great icon at the church in Banganarti in Sudan. We know it happened in 10th century. There is Jesus Christ at the painting fi ghting with the Devil with dozen of souls surrounding him. It’s called Anastasis – Christ is going down to the Abyss and after the fi ght with the Devil comes back from there. The masterpiece survived only in fragments – the majority of the church’s wall was destroyed by humidity and time – 1000 years of the Nile fl oods. The strange painting was discovered four years ago. Archeologists immediately decided to make a deep conservation of it. But the mysteries remained. How was it painted? By whom? Where the artist was from? Who was his master? What kind of materials he used? Wojciech Chmiel, archaeologist and painter decided to make an experiment to solve at least part of the mysteries. This winter he tried to remake the 10th century painting with the techniques, dyes, tools used 1000 years ago. He went to Sudan, collected the pigments himself, grind it to make dyes, used local resins, self made brushes. During the work he used to wear clothes from the epoch, traveled only by camel etc. After a month long work he recreated the painting and answer fundamental questions concerning the masterpiece. The archaeological experiment was successful. The fi rst such experiment in Sudan.
