Comet moth cocoon showing the numerous holes or fenestration which are produced when the cocoon is spun by the larva. This moth is native to the Madagascan rain forests and it is one of the largest moths in the world. The cocoon in this image is 8cm long () not including the silk stalk. The holes are to protect the pupa from drowning in the daily heavy rains. Often called the Madagascan moon moth, this species is endangered in the wild because of habitat loss but the comet moth is being successfully bred in captivity.
