Thetrees are set about thirty feet apart each way; theybegin to bear when quite young, and are not prunedor sprayed — unless it is to trim up an occasionalbranch that droops too near the ground. There are no overlookednuts, no stumps, no underbrush, in which they canbreed; the soil is frequently cultivated, all the nutsare picked up each season, and, consequently, theweevil has not proved to be a serious pest on this farm. When harvesting the nuts, they are never picked,knocked or shaken off. Mr. Lovett waits until JackFrost loosens the crop. Some nut-growers are taking chestnut stump land,and are grafting Paragons, etc., on the sprouts whichcome from stumps. But INIr. Lovett says that thismethod has many objections.
