Papillomavirus virions, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Papillomaviruses are a group of non-enveloped deoxyribonucleic (DNA) viruses that replicate exclusively in body surface tissues, such as on the hands, the soles of the feet, on the body's mucous membranes and on the genitals. Some types of the virus may cause genital warts, while others may result in precancerous lesions. These are lesions that can progress to invasive cancer unless identified with a cervical smear and surgically removed.
