The Rialto Fish Market Venice Italy detail of fish on sale
The fish and vegetable markets (called Pescaria and Erbaria) at the Rialto are one of the more traditional features of Venice. When in the 11th century Rialto passed to Saint Mark the political and religious centre, it became the commercial heart of Venice. Near the Rialto markets offices connected with trade, banking and sea traffic were established. The true heart of the market are the fruit and vegetable sellers at the Campo de la Pescaria and around the Campo San Giacomo di Rialto and the 'Pescaria', the site of the fish market, between Campo delle Beccarie and the Canal Grande. The present building of the Pescheria was built in 1917, but fish have been sold in this site for 600 years.
