Hi m-9- — SIDE ELEVAT ION END ELEV AT 1 O N July 13, 1918 Electric Railway Journal 45 underlying the plant, butthe exciter was placed inthe old engine room. It will be rememberedthat the Niagara Streetpower plant is situated ona rock ledge high abovethe Niagara River. As theriver is the source of cir-culating water it was nec-essary to set the turbineand condensers at a verylow level to economizepower in circulating con-densing water. Moreover, the capacity of the avail-able circulating pump waslimited, so that to avoidthe purchase of a newpumping outfit there wasan additional reason forsetting the equipment ata limited elevation abovethe river level. When theoriginal power plant was built a certain amount of excavation was made in therock ledge for the purpose of accommodating pumps, the remodeling this excavation was utilized to thelimit and enough additional rock was excavated to pro-vide room for the removal of the condenser tubes. Asfinally arranged the turbine was set 23
