The atoms are arranged tetrahedrally, or in a pyramid arrangement, producing a crystal that is extremely strong and hard. Diamond is the hardest natural mineral, and often used in drill bits and engraving tools. It has a high refractive index, dispersing visible light into its component wavelengths, a property that renders it attractive as a gemstone. Its refractive index also means much light is internally reflected, which gives it its brilliance.
