CANALETTO ^Antonio Canale)(1697-1768) 59. — The Ducal Palace In the fore-ground, boats are plying in all directions, filled withport-labourers, whose red calottes, poised on the side, gives thema swaggering air. On the right, we see parts of some gondolas; inone of them the gondolier is lying down, with his head turnedtowards a comrade. In the centre, on the opposite side of the canal,is the palace of the Doge, and on the left, behind some other palaces,the campanile. Numerous gondolas and canoes are mooring alongthe quay. The Feast of the Bucentoro The large canal is covered with magnificent gondolas and elegantboats, full with people dressed in splendid costumes, the livelycolours of which are reflected on the dark water of the canal. Thepalaces on the opposite bank swarm with people at each windowand even on the roofs. The Bucentoro is on the left; from a platform,the Doge is going to throw his ring into the water, symbolizing themarriage of Venice with the Adriatic. Canvas
