A sunflower star Pycnopodia helianthoides on the bottom photographed in Alaska


Sunflower sea stars are voracious predators of the kelp forest and rocky reef ecosystems of Southeast Alaska. Their numbers have recently dropped sharply as Sea Star Wasting Syndrome has ravished the population. Researchers are still looking for the cause of the blight.
