C. W. GROWING SWEET POTATOES. Will you let me know how to start sweet potatoes in the greenhouse to plant out in the field? How and when is it best to start themf Will you de- scribe their culture? O. M.—Pa. Select small, well cured sweet po- tato roots for seed purposes and reject all those showing any signs of decay. Start the roots in a hotbed during April, and plant out the sets as soon as the weather becomes settled in late May. Use a light, sandy soil over the manure in the hotbed and be careful not to over- water the sets after planting. Having prepared your land by manuring, plow- ing and harrowing it well, make ridges two and one-half to three feet apart and, as soon as the weather be- comes sufficiently warm, plant out the sprouts, or "draws," as many call them, twelve to eighteen inches apart along the ridges. All through the summer the rows must be kept well cultivated and it will prob- ably be found necessary to j)ull out a number of large weeds by hand, in addi- tion. Digging the roots must be com- menced just as soon as the first frost has blackened the loaves on the trailing shoots. It is m^eossary to avoid as much as i)OHsil)ic the breaking of the roots, and to dry the roots well in the sun be- fore housing tliem. C. W.
