Snow covers some of the black lava formations that are among the features of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve that sprawls across the Snake River Plain in Idaho, USA. This peculiar landscape is the result of eight major volcanic eruptions that began 15,000 years ago and continued until only 2,000 years ago. Geologists predict that the area will experience another eruption sometime in the next 100 to 900 years. Visitors can tour the park by car or on foot. In the background is the Big Southern Butte, a complex of three volcanic domes that formed approximately 300,000 years ago

A 7-mile (11--kilometer) loop road allows visitors to tour the preserve by car, and many trails encourage further explorations by foot.
