Spine. Coloured 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a side-view of a healthy lumbar (lower) spine. The front of the spine is at left. At bottom is the pelvis. The spine is a cylindrical bones, called vertebrae (white), that support the trunk and head and protect the spinal cord. Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs (blue and green) that allow a degree of flexibility and cushion the vertebrae during movement. Each vertebra has bony projections which provide attachment sites for the muscles and ligaments that hold the spine together.
