Vertical portrait of an Indian shop owner rolling cigarettes for sale at his shop down a back alley in Varanasi.

Wide angle view of an industrious shop owner rolling handmade cigarettes 'beedies' outside his shop down a side alley in the back streets of Varanasi. A beedi, aka bidi or biri, is a thin, flavored, South Asian cigarette made of tobacco which is wrapped in a tendu (Diospyros melonoxylon) leaf, and secured with coloured thread at one end. Beedi-rolling is a very important cottage industry in India and the process of rolling one is very similar to that of a handmade cigarette.
