Harmonograph images, 19th century artwork. Harmonographs use pendulums to control and mix the movement of pens tracing lines on paper. As shown here, this can produce complex geometric patterns. The pattern depends on the relative frequency of the two linked pendulums. Harmonographs were pioneered by the French physicist, Jules Antoine Lissajous in 1857. Artwork from the 18th volume (second period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
