Work from the bottom ofthe left-hand corner to the top of the right-hand corner ofthe square, then fill in on the right and left of this stitchwith two smaller Tent Stitches. Double Stitch, as workedby the Italians, is a centre Cross surrounded by a squaremade with four stitches, each stitch ci-ossing from pointto point of the arms of the Cross. Double Stitch, workedin the Italian style, is used in Kreuzstich and in Russianembroidery more than in Berlin work. This stitch isonly used with others in fancy patterns, and is illustratedin Star, Cross, and Leviathan (Fig. 55). German Stitch.—This stitch is formed from a Tapestry 30 THE DICTIONARY OF Fio. 41. German Stitch. and a Tent Stitch being worked alternately in a diagonal line across the canvas. Towork, as shown in Fig. 41:Pass the Tapestry over fourthreads of canvas, the Tentover two. In the succeedingline, place the Tent underthe Tapestry, and the Ta-pestry under the Tent, but sothat the canvas shows. Thisstitch is only useful wherethe foundation material, likesilk or gold canvas, can be left exposed, and is rarelyemployed for patterns.
