Trilobite fossil. Fossil of a trilobite (Asaphus platyurus latisegmentatus) from the Ordovician period (around 490 to 445 million years ago). Trilobites are extinct arthropods. Asaphus trilobites were bottom-feeding scavengers or predators, found primarily in what is now Europe. Many species of Asaphus developed long eyestalks (not shown). They may have buried themselves beneath a loose substrate, with only the tips of their eyes protruding above, looking out for danger or prey.
