Deglutition mav be affectedif the grow^th be situated upon the epiglottis or in one of thevalleculse. Pain is unusual, but the sensation of a foreign bodyis frequent. There is rarely any external manifestation of thetumor, and the general system only suffers when there is diffi-cult deglutition or impaired respiration. Ldvynfjoscopicallu^ papillomatous growths resemble a wart,cauliflower, raspberry, or mulberry ; irregular in outline, granular. 458 DISEASES OF THE NOSE AND THROAT. and either gray or pinkish in color, they usually spring from thevocal bands and vary in size from a mustard-seed to an Englishwalnut. In some instances they completely fill the laryngealcavity and invade the parts above or below. Although nearlyalways sessile, laryngeal papillomata are sometimes peduncu-lated. It has become customary to speak of a papillomatousgrowth, but in reality it is generally more correct to speak of amass of these growths, which usually starts as a single point,often as a spot of granulation tissue. When touched with aprobe the neoplasm will be found rather soft, insensitive, and,on rather firm pressure, frequently bleeds. Treatment.—Medicines internally and locally applied curemany cases, but mechanical interference is frequently instruments chiefly used are forceps, scissors, knives, snares,
