On heavily manured land the yield averages 16,000 pounds. Estimates of costs of production in the United States are as follows : Preparation of land and fertilizer, $70; seed, $9; transplanting, $20; irrigation, $15; cultivation and hand weeding, $16; harvest- ing, $20; interest, $20, a total of $170 per acre.
