The cinnabar forms as face metal and incrustations in the fissuresof the more compact chert beds, and as richer seams and bunches in thecrushed portions. The chert is highly siliceous. The deposit has beenopened up at several levels by both open-cuts and adits. It is statedthat at present sufficient ore is blocked out to operate the 20-ton furnacefor several years. As a whole the underground workings are not veryextensive, the major portion of the output having come from the open- I. Photo. No. 37. With topography decidedly in their favor, the ore is handled asurprisingly unnecessary number of times between the mine and thefurnace. The latter is a modified Livermore furnace, of 20 tons capacity, which is essentially a tile furnace with inclined reverberatory hearth.^The products of fuel combustion pass directly over the ore layer.
