Blue sky portrait, to 1849 Railway Viaduct reflecting in water, two narrow boats moored Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester, UK

The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. The southern viaduct in the group (seen here, looking north) is the red brick viaduct of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway built in 1849. A m span cast iron bridge takes the viaduct across the Rochdale Canal (foreground view). The trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal joined the Castlefield Canal Basin from the north-east in 1805. The 1765 Bridgewater Canal from the south-west (right background) also joins the canal basin at this location, so this part of the canal basin is known as the Castlefield Junction.
