The preliminary tests with this device have beenso satisfactory that the company is now installing atrial equipment at the Fourteenth Street station. REMOTE-CONTROL CROSSING GATE The Cook Railway Signal Company, Denver, Col.,has recently installed for the Southern Pacific Railwaythe remote-control crossing gate shown in the accom-panying illustration. The crossing protected by thisgate is on the principal street of Decoto, a small townabout 30 miles from Oakland on the main line of theSouthern Pacific. About forty passenger trains, somehigh-speed, and from ten to twenty freight trains passthis crossing daily. At this installation the gate isoperated by means of a track circuit, which is themethod usually preferred by steam lines. For electric railways the manufacturer builds special. Crossing Gate, Southern Pacific Railway track instruments which leave the rails free for thetraction return circuit. This track instrument is lo-cated, say, x/2 mile from the crossing, and the controlof the gate is established through the medium of wiresconnected with the gate-operating mechanism. An-other track instrument placed at the crossing andsimilarly connected releases the gate when the trainpasses the crossing. In some instances where electric trains run very closetogether it is necessary to have two or three of thesetrack instruments between the V^-mile distance pointand the crossing, for if but one instrument at each endof the zone was in existence and two or more trainswere in the zone at the same time, the first train pass-ing the crossing would clear the danger signal. The gate-operating outfit consists of a motor-drivenworm-gear mechanism so interconnected by means of amagnet clutch as to cause the gate arm to fall to thedanger or horizontal
