With the electric powerat hand it was decided to operate the bell on the Key Route pierby a motor attachment. Accordingly, the arrangement illus-trated in the view, Fig. 8, was devised. The bell is mountedon a scaffold, and is arranged so that it may be rung by handwhen necessary. The mechanical ringer consists of an armand hammer, raised and dropped by a cam, which is in turndriven by a sprocket chain from the motor shaft below. Thiscountershaft is belt-driven, with the aid of a belt tightener, bymeans of a General Electric shunt-wound, i-hp, 500-volt motoroperating at 1300 r. p. m. The gearing is such that, at the the total length to the end of the wharf is 16,400 ft. There is14,423 ft. of tangent track on the pier.
