Burning of ‘scarlo’ at carnival of Ivrea, Italy


The carnival of Ivrea takes place over several days in February each year and includes historical ceremonies and parades as well as the spectacular orange battles. The burning of the ‘scarlo’, a pole covered in dry heather, takes place in five town squares on the Tuesday evening and marks the end of the carnival. The scarlo is a symbol of freedom and rapidly rising flames are seen as an auspicious sign for the year to , the scarlo in Piazza Gioberti in the 2005 carnival.
