Wren andPerrault came from much the same class in society. Both were men ofquite exceptional ability, educated to the fullest extent then were men of a curious habit of mind, keenly interested in scienceand its practical application, and both approached architecture from thepoint of view of the physicist and the inventor rather than that of theartist. Perrault never reached the extraordinary attainment of Wren,the reason being that whereas Wren took up architecture as a youngman fresh from his university honours, Perrault did not make his firstventure in design till he was fifty-two. He suffered, moreover, fromthe nemesis of his brothers intrigues, in that his opportunity was short-lived, and failed him before his powers as a designer were maturedand tempered by actual experience of building.
