High blood pressure is defined as a systolic pressure greater than 160 (blood pressure is expressed in millimeters of mercury, mmHg) and a diastolic pressure greater than 90. Blood pressure can be measured with a cuff device (sphygmometer). High blood pressure can have serious consequences affecting the heart, the nervous system and the kidneys.
