Although Monet was more interested in the representation of nature and landscapes, the human figure is also evident in his work, and from time to time the painter even concentrated his own face. He painted his first self-portrait in the early years after his move to Giverny, and the determined character of a fully mature artist showed through. But here is a very different image, presented in 1917. Of the three portraits he painted at that time, this is the only one remaining. He gave it to his friend Georges Clemenceau, who described it as follows: ‘A wave of happiness washed over him when his supreme efforts showed that using his imagination to the full, he would now be able to execute it. It is this flash of superhuman ambition that this wonderful last portrait captured.’
