In1849 he settled in St. Paul, Minn., and for sevenyears practiced his profession. Between 1857 and1877 he was president of different railroads operatingin the northwest, among them the St. Paul and Chi-cago. He was five times elected to the state houseof representatives, and twice to the state senate. In1881, and again in 1885, he was elected mayor of He was elected to congress as a democrat in1886, and was a candidate for re-election in 1888,but was defeated. He is a man of great executivetalent, and has been instrumental in the develop-ment of the resources of Minnesota.
