PULMONARY EMBOLISM, DRAWING
Illustration of pulmonary embolism. PE starts with the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in a vein in the lower limbs, as in phlebitis. The clot breaks off and migrates to the heart through the bloodstream, then penetrates a pulmonary artery until it blocks it. The blockage causes pulmonary arterial hypertension, heart failure and cardiogenic shock.
