Members of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames, and members of the church of All Hallows by the Tower, carry a rose through the City of London during the Knolly's Rose Ceremony. The ceremony, which dates back to 1381, sees a peppercorn rent of a single rose being paid annually to the Lord Mayor, after soldier Sir Robert Knollys of Seething Lane built an illegal footbridge over the road to his rose garden.
