Jerusalem, Israel. 11th October, 2016. Ultra-Orthodox religious men observe as slaughtered chickens are prepared for consumption following the Jewish ritual of Kapparot on the eve of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Observers swing live chickens above their heads for atonement of sins before God and purification. After the sins are passed on to the poultry it is butchered for eating. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Practitioners traditionally observe this holy day with an approximate 25 hour period of fasting and intensive prayer.
