Shuttle/Mir astronaut training. Astronauts C. Michael Foale (left), Edward T. Lu (centre) and cosmonaut Elena V. Kondakova (right) training on a launch pad at Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA. This was during a Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test: a launch rehearsal. Here they are practising emergency escape procedures. Foale was preparing for a stay as the guest researcher on the Russian space station Mir. Foale replaced Jerry M. Linenger during the joint shuttle/Mir missions STS-84 & Mir-23, lasting from 15th-24th May 1997. Foale stayed on board Mir until he was picked up by shuttle mission STS-86 24th September-6th October 1997) and replaced on Mir by David Wolf.
