Sea surface temperature, 2010 global map. The world's oceans are heated by sunlight, with variations in the surface temperature caused by varying latitude, the Earth's rotation, and axial tilt. The temperatures are colour-coded: purple (2 to 8 degrees Celsius), blue (8 to 18 degrees Celsius), green (around 20 degrees Celsius), yellow (around 22 degrees Celsius), and orange and red (26 to 32 degrees Celsius). The data used in this map is from the Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution (MUR) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) dataset. MUR is a combination of SST data, mostly from a variety of satellites, with observation dates ranging from 1981 to the present. This map is is from January 2010.
