Winter Exploration in 1887.—In January, 1887,the first successful winter exploration of the Yellowstoneregion was made. Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka ofArctic fame headed the party consisting of several easternmen, F. Jay Haynes, photographer, and a corps of guides,packers and assistants. Their outfit consisted of astro-nomical instruments, photographic equipment, sleepingbags and provisions which were drawn on toboggans; theparty used Norwegian skis and Canadian web snowshocs,but the snow was so light that they sank readi
