John Jones, the sixth son of William and father of abranch of the Jones family to which this article is spec-ially devoted, was born on his fathers farm at SouthOyster Bay, June 27th 1755. He was married May 2nd1779 to Hannah Hewlett, a daughter of John and SarahHewlett, of Cold Spring. Purchasing a farm of hisfather-in-law, he removed from the south side and settledupon it. Here he built a new house and pursued thecultivation of his farm. He was the father of nine chil-dren—a family no less distinguished in business and com-mercial pursuits than his brother Samuels family was inlaw and politics. His children were: William H., bornOctober 14th 1780, married Elizabeth, daughter of IsaacHewlett; John H., born May i8th 1785, married Louretta,daughter of Divine Hewlett; Sarah, born July 22nd.
