The Battle of Plataea, 479 BC, in which the defeat of the invasion forces of Xerxes was the final land battle of the second Persian invasion of Greece. In the picture Spartan troops confront the Persians. The Spartan contingent was part of an alliance of Greek city-states which formed the Greek army. After an illustration by an unidentified artist in the Cyclopaedia of Universal History, published in Cincinnati in the 1880’s.
