Gorgonopsian reptile attack. Artwork of a mammal-like reptile attacking an armoured reptile around 253 million years ago, during the Permian period. The carnivorous predator at left is a Gorgonopsian, a suborder of therapsid synapsids, and among the largest predators of the time. Inostrancevia (a saber-toothed genus of Gorgonopsian) is thought to have hunted Scutosaurus, a genus of armour-covered reptiles. Inostrancevia reached lengths of metres, while Scutosaurus was up to metres long.
