Earthquake damage in Morocco, September 2023
Satellite image of earthquake damage in Amizmiz, Morocco after a massive earthquake struck Morocco on 8 September 2023. The epicentre was high in the Atlas Mountains about 70 kilometres from Marrakech. The earthquake resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives, leaving thousands more injured and homeless and causing widespread destruction, making it one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country in more than 60 years. Located 55 kilometres south of Marrakesh, Amizmiz was one of the hardest hit by the earthquake. The extent of the destruction, including collapsed buildings and debris scattered throughout the town can be seen at centre. Image obtained by the Pleiades Neo satellite on 10 September 2023.
