When the right wing, under General Fitz John Porter, was engaged on the field of GainesMill against almost the entire army of Lee, across this bridge the division of General Sloeum marched from its position in the trenchesin front of Richmond on the south bank of the river to the support of Porters men. The battle lasted until nightfall and then theFederal troops moved across this bridge and rejoined the main forces of the Federal army.
