It was the same way with the shoes whenthey were issued on the 7th, for the boys from Michiganwere as sturdy ia their feet as in the rest of their bodies, andthere were few who were sufficiently lucky to have a footsmall enough to go into the new shoes. It took a good dealof swapping to come anywhere near outfitting the regiment. The work of vaccinating the members of the regimentbegan on the 6th and was finished on the 7th, and was butpart of the general scheme ia looking after the welfare ofthe volunteer army. There was a good harvest of sorearms, and whenever a fellow would be seen shielding hisleft flank from contact with any sort of an object, it mightbe known that it had taken with him. Col.
