Falmouth Working Boats Racing
The annual Falmouth Week Regatta is held annually in August every year. The event can trace its origins back to the 1830's. The Falmouth working boats was one of the earliest classes to race. Many of the boats racing were built in the 1890's. They worked carrying general cargo out to the ships moored off in the harbour and oyster dredging. The Falmouth native oyster has been protected from over fishing by the simple bye law which prohibits the use of powered craft to dredge for the oysters in Carrick Roads. The lack of power means only a light dredge can be used protecting the sea bed and allowing the oysters to grow.
