Theeminent social qualities of the young lawyer, hisfathers prominence as a public man,, and the brilliantpolitical career into which Judge Woodbury was eii-tering, all tended to entice Mr. Pierce into the facinating yet perilous path of political life. With allthe ardor of his nature he espoused the cause of for the Presidency. He commenced thepractice of law in Hillsborough, and was soon electedto represent the town in the State Legislature. Herehe served for four yeais. The last two years he waschosen speaker of the house by a very large vote.
