Geothermal power station. Power plant for the generation of electricity by harnessing the energy in water and steam that have been heated naturally within the Earth's crust. In areas of volcanic activity, hot water and steam may lie at or near the surface. A geothermal power station taps the steam and uses it to drive electricity turbines. This is an environmentally-friendly, renewable source of energy. This is the Leathers geothermal power station, Salton Sea, California, USA. It began operating in 1989.
