An old engraving of the naval battle between the ‘Monitor’ (centre) and ‘Merrimack’ or ‘Virginia’ (right) on March 9 1862, during the American Civil War. It is from an American history book of 1895. This confrontation took place at The Battle of Hampton Roads, Virginia, USA, also referred to as the ‘Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack’ or the ‘Battle of Ironclads’. The Merrimack (also known as the ‘Merrimac’ was built from remnants of a burned steam frigate USS Merrimack and renamed by the Confederacy as the ‘CSS Virginia’). The battle lasted two days (March 8 and 9 1862) and was significant as it was the first combat between ironclad warships. The Confederate fleet consisted of the Virginia and several supporting vessels. On the first day of battle, they were opposed by several conventional, wooden-hulled ships of the Union Navy. The Union’s ironclad Monitor arrived the next day. The two ironclads fought for about three hours. With neither able to inflict significant damage on the other, the duel ended indecisively. Virginia returning to her home at the Gosport Navy Yard for repairs and strengthening, and Monitor to her station defending Minnesota. The ships did not fight again.
