Community living on a rubbish dump in Kathmandu, Nepal
The Bagmati river flowing through Kathmandu is one of the holiest in Hindu culture yet it stinks and rubbish dumps like this built on the river banks only contribute to the pollution Small communities live on these tips presumably eking a living out of whatever scraps they can recycle amongst the litter Metals and plastics can be collected and sold on and there will always be the occasional useful find that has been discarded by one of the city’s more wealthy residents if the bin man has not spotted it and kept it for himself These people still manage to raise a smile even though their homes are sticks and plastic sheeting unwanted by others This particular dump is to the south of the city near Chobar and Kirtipur and this was taken at dawn in the winter of 2005 hence the beautiful colour and pastel shades in the sky caused by winter mist and enhanced by the poor air quality of the valley Crows and Kites also flock here looking for morsels of food
