In 1861, the Civil War was i)n-cipitated and believing it to be theduty of every man to give his servicesto his country, he entered the Univer-sity in the spring of 1861, and passedthe spring, summer and fall in thedrill and in the study of MilitaryScience and Tactics. On November4, 1861, he entered the service as ad-jutant of the 7th New IIam|)shireRegiment. With his regiment, h(; eii-(;ountered the perils and privationsof a winter voyage to the TorlugasIslands, where he was stationed until. Lieut. Col. Thomas Albert Henderson. the command was ordered to Port Royal, in the sununer of 18()2. He wascommissioned major of the regiment, August 26, 1862. In the unsuccessfulassault upon Fort Wagner, he acted an an aid to Cfjlonel Putnam. He wjujpromoted lieutenant-colonel of the regiment, July 22, 1863.
