Slit-lamp photograph of eye showing a surgical drain (a Molteno tube) inserted to relieve an increased intraocular pressure. The small tube appears at top left, in the 10 o'clock position. Increased intraocular pressure (the pressure within the eye) is the primary feature of the condition known as glaucoma, & results in a loss of sight. Glaucoma takes many forms; loss of sight may be sudden or develop slowly & insidiously over a long period of time. Treatment is aimed at reducing the intraocular pressure. Drugs which improve the drainage or reduce the formation of aqueous humour are used in advance of surgery.
