The Woodpecker family is of greatinterest not only for the variety ofbrilliant and striking colors which markmany of the species but also for itsunusual structual peculiarities, theheavy, chisel-like ^bill, the sharply-clawed feet with two toes pointing be-hind and two ahead, the stout tail-feathers used to help support the bodyagainst the tree trunk, and lastly itspeculiar sharp bristle-barbed combination of odd characters hasproduced a very curious and interestinggroup of birds. Of the twenty-five species of wood-peckers which inhabit the United States, one of the most interesting is the Yel-low-bellied Woodpecker or is a conspicuous bird, easily knownby its bright red head and throat, andblack and white streaks on the sides ofthe head
