An experimental solar-powered telephone in Wilpena, South Australia. Photovoltaic cells fixed atop the pole at left charge batteries housed within the metal cabinet above the kiosk. These batteries then provide an independent power source to boost the signal used to carry the call. The system is intended for use on remote sections of the telecommunications network where it would be costly to set up power lines. This telephone, for instance, serves a small tourist development located 50 kilometres from the nearest town.
