Central Rome, GeoEye-1 satellite image. North is at bottom. The Colosseum (top left) was built from AD 72, and has 50,000 seats. Near centre (white) is the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a unified Italy. It was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935. At bottom right is the Pantheon (domed temple), dating from the 5th century BC. At top right is a bend of the River Tiber. Image data obtained on 11 September 2009. The US-operated GeoEye-1 satellite was launched in September 2008, and orbits at a height of 680 kilometres. It is the world's highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite.
